FB Note on One Day Seminar on “The Threat of Social Engineering & Your Defense Against It”

Event Objective: Department of CSE, CGC – COE organized a One Day Seminar on “The Threat of Social Engineering & Your Defense Against It” on 24th August, 2018. The event was organized to familiarize the students on how to safeguard oneself against the threats of social engineering . About the event: The Seminar was attended by more than fifty students of B-Tech CSE branch. The Seminar emphasized on several methods that an ill natured individual can use to breach information security defenses of an organization. The human approach, often termed Social Engineering, is one of them. The seminar described Social Engineering and its cost to the organization along with discussing various forms of Social Engineering, and how they take advantage of human psyche. It also discussed ways to fight and prevent social engineering attacks and highlighted the importance of awareness and education in winning the battle. The Seminar was delivered by Mr. Saurabh Kaushal, Managing Director, FlipFlop InfoSec Labs, NITTTR, Sector 26, Chandigarh, who is an Information Security evangelist with 7 + years of professional experience which includes research on various vulnerabilities in network & web applications security, Honeynets, Botnet, DDOS to name few. The second speaker of the day was Dr. Parveen Kumar Janjua, Research Scientist at Dr. APJ Abdul Kalam Computer Center, Panjab University, Chandigarh, who is a competent professional with 17 years of experience in the field of Forensic Science. He is an academician, scientist and administrator and has successfully established a university teaching department in state university aling with an extensive experience of managing research projects of diversified nature across his career span. Proven leadership record with ability to create, lead, train, motivate and maintain high performance teams to work under constraints of budget and staff. Rich experience in planning, scheduling, monitoring, contract administration and quality control practices for establishing a department. Conversant with contractual conditions for various purchases of instruments, chemicals like rate contracts analysis, escalation, etc. and coordination of services works. The seminar also involved practical sessions in which students participated enthusiastically. It provided students an exposure of understanding various things to keep in mind while interacting on social media. Director Principal CGC-College of Engineering Dr. Rajdeep Singh, Head of Department CSE Dr. Manish Mahajan, appreciated the efforts made by all the faculty and student coordinators. Event Outcome: The seminar was able to demonstrate various threats of social engineering and precautionary methods one can adopt to protect oneself. The main motive of the session was to teach students the potential threats and the ways and means to protect themselves, while interacting on social media.
